Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) breakfast sausage (Jimmy Dean or similar)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 cups bread cubes (from day-old bread or sandwich bread)
  • 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) chopped green onions (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Cook the Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and fully cooked, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks. Drain excess grease and set aside.
  • Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  • Assemble the Casserole: Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the bread cubes, followed by half of the shredded cheese.
  • Pour the Egg Mixture: Slowly pour the egg mixture over the bread, sausage, and cheese, ensuring everything is evenly moistened. Top with the remaining cheese and sprinkle green onions if desired.
  • Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and the casserole is set.
  • Serve: Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • For a spicy twist, use hot sausage or add diced jalapeños.
  • You can prepare this casserole the night before—just cover and refrigerate it overnight, then bake as directed in the morning.
  • Substitute the bread with cooked hash browns for a different texture.
